About

What if you could actually see, scientifically, the real-time internal health effects of your moods, the things you eat, the activities you do, and the environment around you? Not magic (as neat as that would be!), not internal healing quackery, not I-have-a-third-eye-and-it-looks-inward amazingness. Just real, objective observational cause and effect.

The Healthonaut

This is a gathering place and a launch pad for the scientifically inclined healthy-minded! Dare we even say, health nerds? Health nerds in the making?

Granted, N may equal 1 for many of the experiments here — thanks to my Type 1 diabetes and the technology I use to monitor and control it, I can tell you exactly how things may be affecting you and your body in ways you might not realize. Think stress is just mental? That the chain Italian restaurant that bills itself as high-quality actually uses good-quality ingredients? That walking around all day doesn’t really count as exercise? Let’s test that and discuss!

I’m always eager to hear any ideas or questions you have — reach out to me at thehealthonaut@gmail.com.

What kinds of things can I find here?

The impetus for Healthonaut was uncovering the things perhaps happening in everyone’s body that most can’t see. I hope the insights I get because of my Type 1 can help you — diabetic or not, deeply into your health or just dabbling — live as healthy a life as you want. In addition to that, though, you’ll find posts on:

  • Exercise science
  • Recipes
  • General nutrition
  • Travel health
  • Anything else that touches health (which is basically life . . . so get ready!)

So who are you, anyway?

A woman keenly interested in this big, wide world of ours.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 3 years old. Current tech allows me to see my blood sugar every five minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and that gives me some interesting insights into life. I’m also squarely, proudly a nerd and still, as an adult, want to be an astronaut. Hey, a woman can dream, right? But no matter what, curiosity, inquiry, logic, and science will always remain paramount to me.

Nutrition and fitness have been my passion for as long as I can remember, and while I’m not a scientist, I’ve spent my entire professional career at hard science and health organizations. I was an EMT, too, so have both practical and more academic backgrounds in wellness. It’s what I love, and I hope you’ll share that with me!

I have a thought/question/comment/witty remark that’ll make you laugh.

Great! I’m at thehealthonaut@gmail.com and on Twitter at @thehealthonaut.
